Traditional Arts and Cultural Activities
Let’s Make Moccasin Slippers! (Girls & Boys – Ages 12+)
Although Native peoples from across North America are diverse in cultural practice, language and protocols, one of our shared commonalities is our footwear… moccasins! Moccasin design is determined by many factors, including the land we live on, the maker’s skill, and the resources available.
Join traditional crafters for a 3 hour session in basic line beadwork, & learn how to size and make a pair of custom made slippers, with faux-fur trim.
Duration: 1 – three hour session; 10 – 12 people per session
Cost per person: $20 (includes tools, materials and instructor’s honoraria)
Materials include: Design templates, seed beads, thread, faux fur and micro-suede moccasin kit.
Safe Journey’s Round Dance
The Round Dance begins in the evening, and takes place in a clean, open place. The songs represent thankfulness, unity, and togetherness, and we dance in a circle. Some people believe that the Old Ones come to dance with us, and they appear as Northern Lights bringing beauty and healing.
In the evening before you head home, join our Elders to learn the story and history of the Round Dance, the drum beats, songs, and dance steps!
Indoors or outside, weather permitting.
Duration: 1 – 2 hours or more!
Elder's Honoraria varies: please contact us for details. Optional bannock, jam and tea: $3.50 per person
Evening Group Activities
Let’s Play Hand Games! – Team Tournament
Hand Games are a traditional community game played with bones, counting and kick sticks. Accompanied by fast drumming and singing, Hand Games are a participatory game of good-natured bluff and chance.
On the surface, hand games may seem simple. Two teams face off, one team member hides a set of bones in each of their hands, and the other team tries to guess which hand holds the plain one. But add in a crazy pace, dancing, loud drumming and chanting, and you’re in for an entertaining time!
Hand games were added to the Arctic Winter Games in 1990, with junior categories added in 2002 and 2004. In Native communities, Hand Games are now considered the second most popular event after hockey. In the spirit of our ancestors, and the renewal of traditional customs, the Kapesiwin 2015-16 team challenges you!
10-15 people per team or Round Robin / Duration: 1 – 2 hours or more!
Elders honoraria varies, please contact us for details. Optional stew, bannock, and tea: $7.50 per person
